How to Start Collecting
Interested in starting your own collection?
I made this guide with tips and tricks I learned over many years of collecting.
Enjoy!
Prologue
I would like to warn readers before starting – collecting Mario and Luigi memorabilia is not easy.
- It is very slow, time-intensive, and expensive.
- It may take months, or even years to find a particular item for sale.
- While it is difficult – it can be rewarding.
- We are still uncovering and learning new details from these items.
Where do I start?
Begin by figuring out what exactly it is you want to collect.
Are you interested in all merchandise for a certain game? Or just certain items?
- Start with some ‘achievable’ goals – items that come up for sale often. Guide books, game boxes, etc.
2. Set a long term ‘holy grail’ goal for yourself.
Holy grails (in collecting terms) are items that are very difficult to come across, and usually very expensive.
Think of it like winning the lottery – if you expect you’re going to win the jackpot every time you purchase a ticket, you’re going to be repeatedly disappointed.
It’s something you’re always looking for, but never expecting.
3. Set limits for yourself.
While at my collecting peak, I had a set amount of money set aside specifically in case one of my grails came up for sale.
Unfortunately, since these items rarely come up for sale it’s difficult to determine what the going price is.
From my own experience, I have never paid more than $200 USD for a single item.
If you feel that the price is too high – don’t waste your money. Another will always come up for sale eventually.
Don’t spend all of your savings on an outrageously expensive listing.
